Would-be drivers ready for the road
Tue 20th Jul 2010, 15:50
A group of young people are ready for the road after finishing a pre-driving safety course.
Young motorists are at high risk of being involved in road accidents so the Ignite course, run by Liss Woodcraft Folk, aims to teach them about the dangers of driving.
The students, aged between 14 and 21, celebrated finishing the course last week with a party thrown for them and the volunteers who run the sessions.
Volunteer Anne Walker said: "I am only too happy to help - this course is very worthwhile. Young people have a serious accident record and this course helps young novice drivers to become more aware of the dangers of driving."
The students received certificates of achievement from Councillor Hilary Ayer, the portfolio holder for youth and access for East Hants District Council, and enjoyed a fun night with a presentation and a display of photographs from the course.
Their parents were able to experience first hand the driving simulator, under the tuition of course tutor Ken Gruber, and test their knowledge by completing worksheets from the course.
Woodcraft Folk Leaders Jane Mackrell, Anne Walker and Andrea Paget, who helped make the courses an outstanding success, were also thanked.
Pam Gruber, the course tutor, said: "It has been a pleasure to teach these courses and if I can make a positive difference to these young people's driving experience it is a brilliant outcome. It was good to have Councillor Hilary Ayer to present the certificates and I thank her spending time with the young people."
The next pre-driving course starts on the 14 September and includes an off-road driving day. Further details can be obtained from Pam Gruber, 01730 301270 or at www.ignite-drive.co.uk.
